Abstract:
Electroporation uses electric pulses to create temporary pores in cell membranes. It's like using a can opener on the cell. This physical method of gene transfer can insert nucleic acids into the cell with ease. Some engineers have created a DIY electroporation device called the Electropen, but we created the BioVolt. This device uses the same principle of electroporation but in a compact, accessible form. We have developed additional hacks to this device and We will demonstrate the utility of the BioVolt-poration device by preparing E. coli (BL21 strain) electrocompetent cells and transforming them with a recombinant plasmid expressing green fluorescent protein (GFP). And then also showcase outcomes for what is needed for use on Human Mesenchymal Stem Cells (autologous). This proves that even a homemade device can achieve significant scientific results.
Bio:
Meet Dr. James Utley, PhD, a distinguished Immunohematology expert, cellular therapy pioneer, Data Scientist, and Machine Learning Engineer. A Johns Hopkins alum, he transformed cellular transfusion at the Department of Defense. A true Biohacker, James pushes the boundaries of CRISPR and genetic engineering through self-experimentation. As the former Technical Director at a large healthcare organization, he oversaw 150K successful cellular transfusions, merging technical expertise with innovative practices. His avant-garde publications and FDA-approved breakthroughs underscore his impact. Dr. Utley now holds dual leadership roles: he serves as the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) at Auragens, where he's a trailblazer in the stem cell revolution, and as the CEO of VivaSecuris, an AI security company focused on healthcare use cases. His expertise in Data Science and Machine Learning enhances his ability to drive innovation at the intersection of biotechnology and artificial intelligence. Dubbed the "pirate" of the cellular world and known in some circles as the Leader of the Syndicate, he continues to reshape and advance multiple fields, making a significant difference every day. Dr. Utley's unique blend of skills in cellular therapy, AI, security, and data science allows him to spearhead groundbreaking developments across these crucial sectors.
